JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant is a highly skilled, detail-oriented professional responsible for performing and reviewing day-to-day accounting functions across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and general ledger reconciliations. This role requires exceptional multitasking ability and strong technical accounting skills, with the capacity to handle detailed processes while maintaining accuracy and compliance. The Senior Accountant works closely with the Assistant Controller, Controller, and department managers, while also guiding and reviewing the work of staff accountants to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
This is a regular, full-time role, located in San Francisco, CA. Working hours will be based on Pacific Time.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
General Accounting & Reconciliations
- Prepare detailed journal entries for prepaid expenses, insurance, accruals, employee benefits, deferred rent, interest, allowance for doubtful accounts, and payroll adjustments.
- Maintain and reconcile accounting schedules including prepaid expenses, insurance, fixed assets, construction in progress, and employee advances.
- Run amortizations and capitalized asset additions through the Fixed Asset Module and process eliminations and record investment activity in Netsuite.
- Review staff prepared journal entries and reconciliations for accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
Transaction Review and Oversight (AP, AR, Payroll)
- Review AP invoices, expense reports, and credit card reports prepared by staff accountants.
- Prepare weekly payment batches and submit them to the Assistant Controller/Controller for review.
- Ensure proper vendor setup and maintenance, oversee annual 1099 filings, and review staff prepared property tax filings.
- Review biweekly payroll, manual payroll checks, and YE payroll accrual/reversals.
- Review AR invoices, monitor aging reports, and follow up on outstanding balances.
- Provide support and technical guidance to staff accountants for complex or unusual transactions.
Cash Management, Compliance and Reporting
- Prepare bank wire requests and coordinate intercompany transfers with the Controller.
- Record and reconcile bank transfers to ensure accurate cash tracking across entities.
- Prepare and file compliance reports, including Nevada Live Entertainment Tax and California Environmental Fee returns.
- Support annual financial audit by preparing schedules, documentation, and transaction samples.
- Prepare financial reports and ad hoc analyses as requested by leadership.
Other Functions and Responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
- Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
- Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
- Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
- Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
- Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages and inspires their team.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
- 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience with strong exposure to reconciliations and journal entry preparation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and strong data entry skills.
- Strong understanding of accounting, payroll, and reporting processes.
- Excellent communication skills and professionalism.
- Strong integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask and work effectively across departments.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and eager to learn.
- Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada.
PREFERRED
- CPA license strongly preferred.
- Experience with NetSuite.
- Experience with FloQast.
- Familiarity with nonprofit or event-based organizations.
- Prior participation in Burning Man or familiarity with its culture.
- It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

COMPENSATION:
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated salary range for this position is $105,000 to $116,000 annually.
