JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of Fluffer Management, the Department of Public Works (DPW) Floffice Wrangler will oversee the day-to-day management and operations of the Fluffer Water Station. This position will create and maintain a friendly and professional atmosphere while providing Burning Man Departments and staff with hydration, snacks, and ice during the event cycle. Responsibilities will include cleaning, maintaining, and providing an inventory for the facility, assisting in creating and implementing a staff schedule for the Water Station, distributing ice, keeping current ice tracking logs, ensuring opening and closing procedures for the facility are executed, and mentoring and training staff.
This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:
- From August - September: Full-Time Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Administration and Operations (75%)
- Keep the facility clean, organized, and stocked.
- Become competent in the Ice Tracking System. Using the system, attentively manage and keep a correct, detailed inventory of all Water Station ice distribution; update logs daily.
- Organize, stock, and keep a clean, safe work environment within the Office, Ice Reefer, and Water Station.
- Help to regularly produce comprehensive Water Station staffing and driver schedules.
- Collaborate with Managers and Crew Leads to anticipate and fulfill Water Station servicing requirements.
- Interface with Burning Man department leads to coordinate large daily ice orders and any special event needs.
- Monitor ice levels and arrange for transport of ice via radio.
- Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader guiding people as they work, identifying the best people for the job, instructing and sharing skills as necessary.
- Restock dishwashing sinks with soap and cleaning supplies.
- Monitor and replenish the PH levels of the disinfecting solution; Disinfect the Water Station’s spouts daily.
- Assist in ice distribution, maintaining and cleaning igloos; Help to educate Burning Man departments and staff with proper igloo cleaning and hygiene.
- Be responsible for all end-of-season inventories for the Water Station.
- Maintain professional and effective interactions with all persons, participants, Burning Man departments and staff.
- Assist Fluffers as they come into the station for ice, igloos, and snack/drink/supply restocking; Pass along any messages or information that may need to be disseminated to mobile crews.
- Contribute to the Standard Operating Procedure documents for assigned projects.
- Orient DPW Fluffer team members to the rules and procedures of the Fluffer team, ensure all protocols and responsibilities are understood and fulfilled.
- Observe and relate relevant information pertaining to any major conflicts or issues within the DPW/Burning Man crews to the Fluffer Manager and Assistant Manager.
- Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
Fluffer Services (20%)
- Provide ice to customers at the ice window, and record all ice leaving the facility. Assist visitors with other Fluffer supplies as needed, including snacks, drinks, hygiene items, and basic first aid supplies.
- Under the direction of Fluffer Management, supervise Water Station staff and guide them in their duties, empowering crew and supporting morale.
- Be prepared to start shifts at 7am and have the Water Station open from 8:30am to 5:30pm.
Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)
- Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.
- Participate in Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
- Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
- Perform other duties as required.

- Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
- Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
- Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Familiarity with Burning Man and with event-based production work.
- Proven leadership experience; Ability to lead by example, motivate teams, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience managing a largely volunteer labor force (minimum 1 major project) with a willingness to promote their strengths and respect their limitations.
- Clear, service-oriented communication, verbally and written; Able to evaluate, tailor style and patiently respond to needs for support. Experience with using 2 way radios.
- A quick problem solver; Able to apply critical thinking to situations, create solutions, and remain calm under pressure.
- Operates with behavioral integrity and reliability, paying careful attention to detail in the handling of important information. Able to instill and apply order and cleanliness to the work environment.
- Working knowledge of Google Suite; Comfortable handling real-time data entry for large amounts of information.
- Effectively manages own time, the time of individual team members, and the efforts of the team as a whole.
- A strong understanding of and ability to adhere to safe working practices.
- Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
- Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada
Preferred
- Previous work in the service industry.
- Experience with using 2-way radios.
- It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
COMPENSATION
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:
- From August - September is $15.00 to $17.00 per hour.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
