JOB SUMMARY

The Specialty Construction Assistant Rehab Manager will lead the Rehab Crew through the repair and maintenance of Living Boxes, Office Containers, and other assets. In collaboration with the Manager, they will interpret building designs, coordinate build schedules before the build season, and assist in staff recruitment. Additionally, this role will closely collaborate with Black Rock Station (BRS) Ranch Operations Management and onsite operations.
 

This is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt role, based in Gerlach, NV, running from April to October 2025.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Dept & Team Management (40%)

 

  • Coordinate with the  Specialty Construction Manager to plan for the construction of new buildings, including building plan review, hiring, purchasing, and logistics.
  • Work directly with BRS Ranch Crew to coordinate worksite setup, crew orientation, and general worksite activities. 
  • Maintain continued awareness of material and supply inventory; update management with any needs to ensure that necessary materials, tools, and equipment are on hand throughout build operations. 
  • Provide constructive input to build processes and techniques; design and implement solutions to build requirements.
  • Oversee the deinstallation, winterization, and storage of all Container Build equipment and supplies to ensure they will be in good condition the following season.
  • Create and actively manage daily and weekly work schedules for the Specialty Construction Rehab Crew. 
  • Manage the logging and submittal of the Rehab Crew’s work hours. Maintain clear communication regarding hours with crew members; ensure that hours are reported on time.
  • Ensure that paychecks are distributed to the crew promptly.
  • Stay up to date with email correspondence and departmental communications. Distribute any relevant information to crewmembers in a timely fashion.
  • Attend and support crew attendance at daily Morning Meetings.
  • Maintain continued situational awareness of crew and project status; promptly communicate concerns to management.
  • Monitor personal well-being, know work expectations, and proactively address concerns.
  • Be available to drive and haul for material runs to Reno and surrounding areas.

 

Documentation and Tracking (35%) 

                                                                                              

  • Throughout the build season, track and maintain accurate and up-to-date logs of work progress and material usage per project. Ensure all construction and repairs are documented, photographed, and tracked throughout the season using MaintainX.
  • Receive orders and oversee the maintenance of the material yard zones. 
  • Track and maintain the inventory and condition of tools and supplies and the condition of infrastructure throughout the season. 
  • Complete end-of-season inventory of all tools, supplies, and materials, noting their condition and any maintenance or repairs needed for the following year.
  • Assist in tracking the building fleet as it is prepared for deployment.
  • Create reports, and maintain related correspondence.
  • Know, share, and use the proper communication pathways for escalating personnel issues. Learn how to and, as needed, create proper supporting documentation regarding such matters.
  • Work with the Rehab crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.
  • Provide written feedback at the end of the event cycle that scrutinizes and critiques the successes of the season and areas in need of improvement to improve overall efficiency.

 

Safety (20%)  

                             

  • Train all crew members and serve as a team mentor on shop equipment, tools, and material usage, focusing on safety, best practices, skill development, daily maintenance, and cleanliness.
  • Take the lead on ensuring a safe and orderly job site.  
  • Establish and oversee the maintenance of a clean and safe work site; ensure that all Rehab crews are provided with and utilize the necessary OSHA-approved safety equipment.

 

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%) 

  • Abide by the rules and codes of conduct described in the NVO Leadership Toolbox), NVO Compass, Ranch Protocols, and the Specialty Construction S.O.P.
  • Be familiar with and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies.
  • Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader directing people as they work, instructing, and sharing skills as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance within the department.

  • Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
  • Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages and inspires their team.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
  • Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.


 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

REQUIRED

  • Direct experience with residential or commercial construction projects.
  • Experience in, or working knowledge of, metal fabrication and residential or commercial electrical and plumbing.
  • Understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, and large-scale project management.
  • Extensive knowledge of construction methods and/or structural engineering.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to lead by example, motivate teams and work with a largely unskilled volunteer labor force.
  • Working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of MaintainX
  • Experienced in using Google Sketchup or similar CAD software.
  • Instills and applies order and cleanliness to the work environment and pays careful attention to detail in handling important information.
  • Effectively manages own time; highly organized, able to prioritize, detail-oriented, and motivated.
  • Able to recognize the need for and keep confidentiality.
  • Physically fit and able to lift heavy objects (minimum 50 pounds) safely.
  • Willing and able to travel and relocate to Gerlach, NV, for the work season.

 

PREFERRED

  • Experience supervising major projects in remote wilderness and/or desert environments.
  • First-Aid knowledge.
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

 

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

 

 

COMPENSATION: 

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $17.00 to $20.00 per hour.

This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
