JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Staff Showers Attendant will perform shift based work at the on-playa Staff Shower Facility aka The Wet Spot. Duties will include checking or scanning people into the facility based on their credentials, cleaning the shower stalls, sinks, and other facility areas, reporting maintenance needs and water storage levels, and performing other tasks as directed.

  This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: 

  • From July - September: Full-Time , Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada

 DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Check-in Attendant (35%)

  • Verify that people arriving at the Staff Showers are authorized to use the facility. 
  • Scan and/or otherwise account for the number of people showering.
  • Attend questions and take down feedback to share with management with respect and care.
  • Prepare written feedback with the purpose of improved overall efficiency and suggestions for next year.

Cleaning (35%)

  • Clean showers, sinks, floors and other common areas at the beginning, during, and end of the shift to a standard identified during training and orientation.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as supplied by management.

Daily Operations (25%)

  • Seek out and report upon any non-functioning equipment; escalate as needed when critical. 
  • Monitor all utilities and report on pumping/filling needs as identified. 
  • Assist with communications; inform various departments about Staff Showers hours and rules.
  • Provide services with care and discretion; give thoughtful acknowledgment to the different comfort levels of shower users and assist with special accommodation when possible.
  • Help maintain a safe, calm, and comfortable environment for all and politely encourage guests attending the facility to follow suit. 
  • Know the proper pathways to escalate any personnel concerns appropriately with management.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.
  • Adjust workflow to support changing safety protocols as directed.
  • Participate in meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 Required

  • A willingness to learn and perform the required tasks of the job, showing up to assigned shifts on time and ready to work.
  • Ability to work early or late (4:30am/11pm) shifts.
  • Effectively manages own time and the efforts of the team as a whole.
  • Capacity to safely move/carry 40 lbs., and reach and work above head height.
  • Capable of working with supplied cleaning materials, wearing PPE appropriately, and proper disposal of waste materials.
  • Ability to work well with others; encourages a collaborative work environment; Clear, service-oriented, and respectful communication, verbally and written.
  • Capable of maintaining confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment; able to practice discretion in order to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

Preferred 

  • Previous experience in service or cleaning.
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

COMPENSATION

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From August - September is $15.00 to $17.00 per hour.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • On-playa:  This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance.
