JOB SUMMARY

The Black Rock City (BRC) Housing Assistant Manager will support the BRC Housing Manager and collaborate with the BRC Housing team to facilitate the transport, placement, and recovery of staff RVs, travel trailers, shiftpods, and Kodiak tents. This role will do real-time monitoring of all housing dispatch communications.
 

This is a temporary, full-time, Exempt role, based in Gerlach, NV  running from May to October, 2026

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Logistics (70%)

  • Support the streamlined handling, organization, delivery and placement of staff trailers and portable living units in accordance with housing layouts, power grids and emergency response plans in BRC and on Burning Man Project properties.
  • Maintain awareness of staff arrival dates through coordination with department leads helping to ensure the readiness of housing units upon arrival of staff.
  • Work in collaboration with the DPW Heavy Equipment and Transportation Team (HEaT), as well as the Gerlach Residence team for housing movement and placement. 
  • Ensure the readiness of trailers for safe and reliable transport.
  • Assist with the check-in and check-out of serviceable trailers to ensure no problems are overlooked for the event occupation and post-season maintenance.
  • Maintain clear communication with the Housing Dispatch Lead to ensure current schedules and obligations are met.
  • Oversee and assist the Shiftpod crew for delivery, installation (when needed), and reclamation of the shiftpods and Kodiaks post-event
  • Verify all infrastructure is in place and ready for use prior to BMT placement. Be aware of all guidelines on safe methods for properly connecting power service to housing units in Gerlach and on playa. 


Maintenance (10%)

  • Evaluate the condition of each housing unit and create written documentation of all required repairs.
  • Support the assessment and rectification of various problems associated with trailer transportation before, during, and after the event.
  • Purchase as needed specialized parts and equipment needed to perform repairs and upkeep to shift pods and Kodiak tents. 
  • Document any repair needs by creating Work Orders through MaintainX, Housing Dispatch and/or teaching the asset occupant.
  • Oversee end-of-year processes to prepare all mobile housing units for winter storage.
  • Report any concerns regarding living conditions or the safety of housing assets

 

Team Management and Support (20%)

  • Create daily and weekly work schedules for the BRC Housing team. Update the team in a timely manner of any changes to their schedule.
  • Ensure that the crew are logging worked hours and that timecards are approved by the biweekly deadline. 
  • Plan and implement daily department meetings, ensuring that times and locations are shared in advance.
  • Be aware of the atmosphere within the crew. Communicate concerns regarding social climate and protocol to the BRC Housing Manager.
  • Know, share, and use the proper communication pathways for escalating personnel issues. Learn how to and, as needed, create proper supporting documentation regarding such matters.
  • Assist in creating a BRC Housing team camp in BRC and potentially helping to organize crew building activities. 

 

Documentation and Tracking (5%)

  • Keep a basic inventory of all parts, tools, shop equipment, and other necessary maintenance items.
  • Assume responsibility for and ensure that all documentation noted above and any additional reports meet the standards outlined and shared by the BRC Housing  Manager. 
  • Provide written feedback describing the season's successes and areas needing improvement to improve overall efficiency and suggestions. 

 

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Create positive relationships with nearby neighbors and community members in Gerlach. report any necessary concerns the neighbors have shared.
  • As needed, submit receipts and any expense reports, ensuring forms are complete and submitted on time.
  • Maintain clear and regular lines of communication with NVO and DPW  Team members, providing regular reports and feedback as necessary.
  • Attend staff Meetings as requested.
  • Familiarize yourself with, and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
  • Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
  • Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Familiarity with the towing and placement of travel trailers.
  • Ability to play four-dimensional Tetris in a fluid space-time continuum (brilliant logistician!)
  • Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada.
  • Clearly and concisely communicates verbally and through written correspondence. Tailors communicate to the receiving party with appropriate professionalism. Experienced and comfortable with using 2 way radios.
  • Open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in daily tasks.
  • Able to accept feedback and remain calm and focused under pressure.
  • Maintains a respectful and polite demeanor, providing services with care, and offering thoughtful acknowledgment and accommodation of requests. 
  • Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment and trains staff to uphold and practice discretion.

  • Able to work in an extreme environment, including drastic temperature changes, high winds, and low to no visibility.
Preferred
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.
  • Experience in working as a property manager.
  • General knowledge of electricity and construction.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

 

COMPENSATION: 

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $1,000. to $1,100.per week.

This position will be physically demanding and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
