JOB SUMMARY
This Department of Public Works (DPW) Pre-Build Man Pavilion Construction role will build and fabricate wooden structures, often working from blueprints to create framework and assemble components for Black Rock City’s Man Pavilion. This role requires pro-active, collaborative teamwork, ability to follow direction, and basic carpentry knowledge, working under the direction of the Man Pavilion Construction Foreman and the Man Pavilion Shop Supervisor.
This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:
- From May - July: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, based in Gerlach, NV .

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Carpentry (90%)
- Read and interpret plans: Follow blueprints, drawings and sketches to implement project specifications and material requirements.
- Measuring and Cutting: Measure and cut wood to correct dimensions to fabricate structures to create components for the Man Pavilion.
- Follow approved designs for the construction of the site, collaborating to adapt as necessary.
- Material Handling: Move, organize, and ensure materials are safely handled.
- Assist in providing structural dimensions, general installation, general fabrication support, and installation problem solving.
- Framing: Build frameworks, including columns, beams and joints.
- Finishing: Ensuring smooth surfaces, proper alignment and appropriate hardware are used.
- Repair and maintenance: Inspecting and ensuring damaged tools are properly tagged and repaired.
- Maintain common work spaces; support a tidy worksite, ensuring that tools and equipment are sorted and securely stored at the end of each day.
- Conduct structural inspections daily and after weather events to maintain sound structures in safe condition.
- Provide any feedback and input to the Construction Foreman and Crew Lead to support efficient and safe conditions for the crew and worksite.
- Follow and encourage best practices and the use of necessary OSHA approved safety equipment.
- When demonstrating technical skills or offering perspectives and opinions for specific projects, maintain a respectful and encouraging team-player demeanor.
Time Management (5%)
- Proactively and effectively manage own time to create an environment of collaboration and safety in the crew.
Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)
- Share all personnel concerns with crew management.
- Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.
- Adjust workflow to support changing safety protocols as directed.
- Participate in meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
- Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
- Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
- Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
- Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
- Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
- Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Knowledge of general construction practice.
- Working knowledge of and experience with power tools including: table saw, skilsaw, miter saw, jigsaw, pneumatic.
- Experience maintaining clean and organized common workspaces.
- Capable of climbing on ladders, scaffolding and lifting/carrying at least 60 pounds regularly.
- Motivated and organized with good time management skills; Able to take initiative while still maintaining respectful boundaries and protocol.
- Ability to work safely with awareness and use clear communication in a fast-paced production style environment.
- Experience participating on construction or site crews at Burning Man or in other festival environments; familiarity with event-based production work.
- Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
- Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man work ranch, Black Rock Station, situated in Gerlach, Nevada.
Preferred
- Experience as a DPW Crew member.
- OSHA 10 or 30 hour Construction & General Industry Certification.
- It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
COMPENSATION
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:
- Immediate start through August 2, 2025.
- From May - July is $18.00 - $19.50 per hour.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Off-playa Only: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
